A family distillery in the center of Flanders officially founded back in 1880, the Filliers distillery is located in the Belgian town of Bachte-Maria-Leerne. The Filliers family has been producing Genever, the "father" of gin, since the 19th century, so the idea of producing a gin seemed an entirely natural step. Always family-run, it was in 1928 that Dry 28 was invented, which can be considered in all respects the first Belgian bin. The creator of the recipe is Firmin Filliers (1888-1965), a member of the third generation of Master Distillers. The 28 in the gin's name indicates both its date of birth, 1928, and the fact that it contains 28 botanicals including: juniper berries from Italy, coriander from Bulgaria, lavender flowers from France, orange blossom from Spain, spices from Jamaica, malt from France, bitter root from India, ginger from China, angelica root from Belgium, oranges from Spain, lime from Mexico, lemons from Israel, and hop flower from Belgium. Also in the Filliers family is the distinctive Sloe gin. It is made from the best Allegheny sloe gins that are harvested just after the first frost, around October. Production is limited to 2,300 liters because of the difficult availability of the raw material. In addition, sloes are macerated inside Filliers dry gin 28 for four months. Sloe Gin turns out to be subtle and refined, yet complex and full in all organoleptic components. Smooth and velvety, it is strongly reminiscent of red fruits and ripe, jammy berries.
