George Willsher was a man who could hardly conform to norms and rules. What he wanted to create was a bold and different whiskey, a blended with a high malt content, a
true highlander with a great pedigree. In 1864, while everyone was trying to conform to a certain style, George Willsher decided to create something different. A blended scotch whiskey made with 50 percent single malt and 50 percent single grain bottled at 100 proof. Different releases for this incredible blended. The Kyloe, named after a breed of cattle native to the Highlands, strong and robust just like the whiskey to which it gives its name. The 10-year-old, aged in former rum casks. Two versions aged 12 and 21 years in which rich, robust malt whiskies from the Highlands and Speyside are matured in ex-Sherry and ex-Bourbon casks and then blended with grain whiskies from the Lowlands aged in ex-Bourbon casks. 50% malt and 50% grain for a whiskey bottled at 50% vol. Finally, the Black Bull 40 Blended Scotch, a prestigious selection of old malt whiskies (90 percent of the total) distilled in the 1960s and blended with
grain whiskies from distilleries no longer in operation.
Black Bull, which since its inception in 1864 has done nothing but remind us how bold choices lead to long-lived results, today, with the Faldo Edition releases, continues to not disappoint.
The Faldo collection was born out of a collaboration between Euan Shand, his son Andrew and Sir Nick Faldo, with a desire to commemorate the latter's glorious golfing career. One release for each milestone; the 18-year-old, like the age at which Faldo turned professional, and the 30-year-old, a tribute to the number of victories Faldo collected on the European Tour and the 30th anniversary of his third British Open victory at Muirfield in 1992.
Double maturation in oak casks for a whisky that is an all-around reminder of its celebratory nature: rich to the eye, it does not contradict itself on the nose or palate. The former is sweet wood, creaminess, dried fruit; the sip is forthright and full of character, with a long, intense finish.
So whether you open it to also celebrate a milestone or just for the love of Black Bull whiskies: Slàinte Mhath. Cheers.
