Production area: Piani hill, Ferrere sub-zone in the commune of Treiso
Variety: Barbera 100%; exposure: west
Altitude: 250 - 350 m a.s.l.
Year of planting: 1965 - 2005
Training system: gujot, plant density per hectare: 4000 for the 1965 part and 5000 for the 2005 part
First year of production: 1960 (historically our Barbera was called Ronchi, but later, due to new land acquisitions and varietal changes on existing land, the name Piani was changed to Piani in 1990).
Soil: medium-textured with a small percentage of a type of clay, very similar to bentonite, which makes the soil more spongy, very prone to superficial shifts, but gives the grapes a good tannic structure.
CHARACTERISTICS:
The name Piani, attributed to the area where this vineyard is located, indicates precisely a part of the hillside that is less steep than average, already historically known for the production of quality Barbera. Generally speaking, the entire Langhe district is characterised by the production of soft, elegant wines. However, the particular soil on which this Barbera is planted manages to give a vine rich in colour and acidity, but poor in tannins, a discrete structural component that makes it a recognisable element.
TECHNICAL NOTES:
This wine is produced trying to exalt to the maximum what are the characteristics of the vine: vinosity, complexity and persistence. After a maceration period of 15/20 days, depending on the vintage, in temperature-controlled steel tanks, it is passed directly into wood. It is matured for about 8/9 months in oak barrels (30/40% in partly new barriques and the rest in 50 hectolitre barrels), then blended, bottled and left to rest for about 2 months in the bottle before being put on sale. The low yields, long macerations and the right amount of wood give this wine characteristics of longevity, complexity and importance that have nothing to envy to those of the noble Nebbiolo.
TASTING DATA SHEET
The colour is a brilliant and intense ruby red, its vivacity making it particularly pleasant and inviting. The very fine olfactory sensations grow slowly, providing first fruity nuances of blackberry and baked plum and then vinous, fermenting nuances, typical of Barbera, with the right aromatic contribution of wood. Overall, the olfactory fragrance provides a pleasant and appetising impression. Savouriness and acid impressions characterise this wine that does not conceal its polyphenolic endowment. The good structural breadth makes it particularly interesting and with a persistent aftertaste.
