Centuries of aging and blending experience is clearly evident in this spicy and unique distillate, whose history, like all our blends, is steeped in seafaring life. Unlike other A.H. Riise spirits, which are characterized by a brighter amber hue, Black Barrel evokes the nuances of molasses syrup: it is the result of an aging process in barrels with deeply charred interiors.
At one time, charring was used to remove traces of the salted fish and meat previously stored in the barrels. It seems to have been French cognac producers in the 15th century who sensed how charred wood gave the spirit a darker color and also changed its taste, instilling more complex, smoky and spicy notes, albeit with a reduced tannic content.
