The barley in Koskenkorva is unique, and Saana and Elmeri, the two varieties present, are the two northernmost types of barley grown in the world. The long days of the summer season when barley grows at its best make for a large harvest in the fall. The water used in distillation is one of the purest in the world. It is filtered daily through the ridges of the Salpausselkä, and all that needs to be done is to filter out the leaves and branches carried by the current.
