At Hastings in 1066 the Saxons and Normans faced off in a battle that changed the fate of the island, and to this event Julian Haswell, a master distiller with more than 30 years' experience, decided to dedicate his new gin. Soft and delicate, ideal for classic blending that nevertheless winks at tradition, Hastings 1066 Gin is distilled in 150-liter Arnold Holstein pot-stills; it has as its main botanicals Moroccan coriander seeds, European juniper and angelica root, lemon and orange peel from Spain, Morocco and Haiti, and licorice and gooseberry from Eastern Europe. And perhaps it was the suggestions of these spices from around the world that made Julian's decision to introduce the new Gin at Fat Tuesday in Hastings in March 2019, amid the parades, laughter, and revelry of the U.K.'s most important Mardi Gras.
