In 1871 Pedro Fernandez, after completing his studies in France, returned to his native Hacienda Santa Ana, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, with the idea of creating a rum with a style similar to that of the best French brandies and cognacs. In fact, originally, in full French style, his rum was consumed only by his family and guests, who served themselves directly from the cask, so it was that fond drinkers christened it "Ron del Barrilito."
Put on the market in 1880, since that date the Fernandez family has been using the same secret formula and aging method to produce a unique sugar cane distillate beloved by generations of enthusiasts. Ron del Barrilito is a premium artisanal rum recognized by many experts as one of the best rums in the world, often compared to the finest and most elegant French cognacs. Hacienda Santa Ana stands within the sugarcane plantations of the Fernandez family, which has made a love of rum and simplicity the company's philosophy. Born as a rum for home consumption, it has become one of the most beloved rums among Puerto Ricans.
The Barrilito 5 Stars Ron is the pinnacle of Hacienda Santa Ana's production, which rightfully brings it to be, arguably, the best Puerto Rican rum ever made. In an extremely limited series, it is a blend of rums aged up to 35 years in former Sherry Oloroso white oak barrels, thus harking back to the Fernandez family's early production in the second half of the 19th century. Powerful and elegant, full-bodied rum with a notable shoulder of woody hints. Hints of plums, bananas, almonds, vanilla and caramelized brown sugar appear on the nose. The palate is soft, silky, full. The very long finish carries notes of smoked wood. A connoisseur's rum, the diamond of Puerto Rican rum production.
